Seagulls take off and skim a lake at sunset, splashing water under a golden sky.

Bergson's Birds

The past is not behind us.

For when I see the sun strike

a patch of water,

many birds descend as one,

swelling the point of sensation

as they swoop,

drawing into the image

the memory of something absent

only a moment before.
